Does your business stand still? Are you expecting to have the same turnover, product lines and number of employees in 5 years that you have now? For most businesses, the very idea is ridiculous. Businesses change all the time, which is why they need flexible accounting software systems.

Do I really need flexible accountancy software?

You could choose a basic accountancy software package that fulfils your needs now. It might be relatively affordable, and it will certainly help you to manage your accounts systems more effectively. Let's say, however, that this time next year, you begin to sell your products or services outside the UK. Your current basic accountancy software doesn't let you handle foreign currency transactions, so you either have to buy another piece of software, or cobble together some sort of fix that lets you handle overseas currency in your accounts.

On the other hand, you may only have three or four members of staff at the moment. It's easy to handle their salaries, benefits, bonuses, tax and National Insurance payments with your current system. In 5 years, however, you could have 50 people working for you over two or three sites - how will your existing accountancy software deal with this? More importantly, will you have to appoint a payroll company at additional expense?

So we feel that the answer is "Yes" - you do need flexible accountancy software. You need it because you don't know exactly where your business is going to be in the next few years, but you do know that you want to spend your money wisely. You need it because when you're concentrating on growing your business, you don't want to be wondering whether your accountancy software can keep up with your progress. You need it because you can't underestimate the value of knowing that your finances are in safe hands.
